Forenex Summer Courses

As the name suggests, the ‘Daily Diary’ is an activity we do every day in class.  Our thoughts, ideas and opinions are recorded in our notebooks.  Amy encourages us to use the new structures and vocabulary we have been learning during the lesson in each entry.  She helps us improve by correcting our work and the new voabculary we learn goes up onto the ‘Vocabulary Wall’.

Sometimes a game is the best way to get us speaking! In Pearl’s class we played ‘Celebrity head’ to practise new vocabulary, question formation and fluency.  One person sat in front of the board and she wrote a famous person’s name on the board behind.  The person had to ask the class yes/no questions to try to guess who they were.

Today in class we discussed leisure time activities with Aneliese.  Using the new language we had to create advertisements to promote our favourte passtime and present them to the class!

¡Hola un día más!

Señoras, señores… hoy es 15 de julio y nos hemos dado cuenta de que nos queda justo la mitad del curso para irnos… y nos hemos puesto sentimentales. Parece que está muy atrás aquellos días en los que los compañeros de piso no nos conocíamos, que en la discoteca mirábamos a los demás sin el típico cruce de amistades, que no conocíamos a todos los monitores…

Está siendo una estancia fantástica y aunque echamos de menos a nuestra gente, en Rialta nos hemos convertido en una gran familia en la que todos nos ayudamos y compartimos los mejores momentos del verano… Nunca te puedes imaginar la cantidad de buenos amigos que podemos llegar a hacer en tan poco tiempo.

¡Por cierto! Hoy la fiesta superó nuestras expectativas… ¡EL PSIQUIÁTRICO! Nos hemos repartido en grupos, los cuales íbamos a un médico. Nos hacía una prueba y si la pasábamos nos daba una golosina que era el truco para que el loco (que teníamos que perseguir y retener) nos ayudara a adivinar qué personaje creía ser. ¡De locos!

Se me hace tarde. Mañana seguimos hablando, ¿vale? ¡Muchos besos a todos!

Our camp is full of talented students and we intend to make full use of them!  Art and drama both have their place in the language classroom.  Here’s how they’re incorporated into our daily lessons…

You should see our classroom this week.  It looks amazing!  The walls are covered in our best work - we even have new vocabulary hanging from the ceiling!  The work we do on grammar in the morning , vocabulary and projects gets displayed on the walls of our room. As the days and weeks pass, we have a continued record what we’ve learned and how we’ve progressed. With such colourful walls, it makes for a much more positive and friendly learning atmosphere.

Drama activities help us build our confidence, fluency and pronunciation.  With a bit of help from Laura, we wrote our own scripts, rehearsed in our groups and finally, performed for the rest of the class.  As you can tell from the photos, we’re a dramatic group!

Siguen pasando los días, pero cada uno es mejor que el anterior… y hoy no ha sido menos!!! Tras las clases de inglés y las comidas, nos hemos dirigido al campo de golf Torre de Hercules. Allí priméramente hemos practicado el putt en 9 hoyos, siguiendo aténtamente las instrucciones de nuestro monitor.

Una vez salidos del green, hemos estado visitando la Torre de Hércules y La Rosa de los Vientos, donde nos han explicado que se une el océano Atlántico con el mar Cantábrico. La torre es impresionánte, y ha sido reciéntemente nombrada Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Su faro, del siglo I, ha tenido que guiar a miles de barcos, entre ellos los…

PIRATAAAASSSSSS!!! Han llegado los piratas a abordandonos durante la asamblea en sus galeones, y lanzandonos con sus cañones andanadas… de diversión. Mostachos, espadas y parches en el ojo es lo que ha abundado esta noche en la discotéca. Un verdadero botín de buen royo y carcajadas.

Y ahora… a dormir; nos vemos mañana (a cambio de unos doblones, claro!).

Using the students’ favourite songs in class is not only a great way to get them motivated and having fun with English, it’s also a great way to improve pronunciation (connected speech, elision and assimilation). Just like with video, there are lots of activities that a Forenex teacher uses to make the most of music.

We listened to a classic song in Jessica’s class today (Dream On by Aerosmith) and did activities which helped us to understand the lyrics and sing like professionals! (Well, some of us sounded better than others!!).

First we talked about what we already knew about the band and the song. This introduced lots of new language and vocabulary. While the song played we had to listen carefully and try to fill in the missing words on our worksheet - harder than it sounds! The best part was getting to sing along with the music - finally understanding what the words meant!!
The benefits of using video in the EFL classroom are now widely accepted but spending the entire period just sitting in front of the TV is neither effective or popular with the students. With a little thought and planning, watching TV becomes an excellent tool for language learning/teaching. Here’s how we do it…

Before the movie starts, Brian got us talking thinking and talking about the characters and the plot of the film. This helps us follow the story, even if we can’t understand every word.

We had questions to answer while we were watching the movie so we had to really pay attention to what they were doing and saying in each scene.

We checked the answers as a group and in the next class we created character profiles with the new language and vocabulary we had learned.

Comienza la segunda semana de curso, y estamos con las pilas bien cargadas para afrontar la mañana de lunes. Hoy nos ha tocado un dia de deportes acuáticos. En vela, hemos subido un escalón, y nos hemos atrevido a embarcarnos en un “crucero”. Ha sido muy divertido, ya que, pese a que no acompañaba el dia, las rachas de viento nos han permitido realizar maniobras de lo más intrépidas.

Por otro lado, hemos disfrutado del “Zogby”, la famosa bola de hamster que te permite andar sobre al agua. La verdad es que acabas agotado, pero la diversión practicándolo merece la pena.

Y por fín, la noche. Una de las fiestas más esperadas…la “LOVE PARTY”. Nos hemos tenido que esmerar para lograr “conquistar” a nuestra pareja pretendida, y disfrutar así de una cena y discoteca de lo más romántica. Como cada día, hemos tenido la elección de acampado VIP, siempre coreada y aplaudida por alumnos y monitores.

Mañana más, y seguro que mejor… ADIOS!!!!

¡Hola holaaaa!

¡Otra vez domingo! Jolín, no os podéis imaginar lo rápido que se pasa el tiempo por aquí arriba… ¡el día 25 empieza a ser una palabra prohibida!

Bueno, como ya suponemos que sabréis, hoy tocaba excursión. Hemos estado en el DOMUS, La casa del Hombre, en Coruña. ¡Nunca pensé que un museo podía ser tan divertido! La norma era “prohibido no tocar” jeje. Todo lo expuesto era para experimentar… y la verdad es que es una buena forma de aprender. ¿A que no sabíais que 250gr de helado tienen más sodio que 250 de cacahuetes salados? ¡Y mil curiosidades más que os contaremos!

Por cierto papis, aunque estos días no os hemos hablado de las fiestas no significa que no hayamos tenido, ¡eh! Vayamos por partes: el viernes, por ejemplo, tuvimos la fiesta… ¡FLOWER POWER! Con flores y a lo loco, en Rialta tuvimos un flash-back a los años 60. ¡Hasta los monitores nos enseñaron pasos sesenteros! Cuando vayamos a una discoteca vamos a causar sensación

El Sábado, sin embargo, la fiesta tenía un motivo mucho más tranquilo: ¡LA FIESTA DEL PIJAMA! Fue muy gracioso vernos a todos bailando como locos y con el pijama puesto, cuando normalmente si llevas el pijama sueles estar para pocas fiestas… Lo curioso de esto fue que aún en pijama estamos todos guapísimos… ¡somos unas perlas!

Y hoy… ¡FIESTA DEL PEINADO MÁS ORIGINAL! Por una vez, los chicos han dejado en mantillas a las chicas. Se han “soltado la melena” y hemos visto una auténtica pasarela de tintes y peinados… ¡menudo cambio!

Tras la cena, ¡a quemar calorías! Ya nos sabemos casi todos las coreografías de los temazos de Rialta. La cosa se va animando según nos vamos conociendo Pero para quien quiera saber más, ¡que venga! Solo los chicos Forenex sabemos lo que es esto…

Y por hoy ya ha estado bien. Mañana nueva semana… ¡y nuevas sorpresas! Pero ahora, a reponer energías. ¡Hasta pronto!

Lo que parecía iba a ser un dia “tranquilo” en Coruña Summer School, se convirtio en otra sorpresa, ya que después del english test, recibimos la noticia de que tocaba hacerse las fotos de grupo y la foto general del curso. Cada grupo, junto a su monitor, hemos tenido la libertad de elegir el posado para la instantanea.

Nos hemos enfundado la camiseta oficial del curso, por lo que todos, ademas de guapos, ibamos perfectamente conjuntados. El entorno que nos ofrece Rialta ha sido perfecto para que el resultado haya salido a pedir de boca!!!

Yo creo que, mejor que seguir hablando, veáis vosotros mismos el resultado…ADIOOOSSSS !!!

After a week of classes, the students all took their first progress test.  As when learning anything, it is important for the students to see their progress in order to stay motivated.  That’s why these tests are not about passing or failing.  They are designed to show the kids where they have improved and what they still need to work on.  Here’s a look at what a FNX progress test is like…

There is total silence in David’s classroom as the students complete the grammar section of the test.  The instructions are on the board but they can still ask the teacher questions if they are stuck or unsure.

On our courses there is a big focus on improving the learners’ ability to understand spoken English, so each test includes a listening section.  Meghan does a ‘live listening’ with her group to see how much their comprehension has improved.

Every day the students work are working on their writing skills by keeping a daily diary.  For the kids in Rachael’s class, there was an essay question which put their skills to the test.

There were no nerves in Brian or Annie’s class.  The kids were very confident that they would all get top marks.  In fact, there were only smiles for the camera during the test - a positive sign!  And by the way, they all did very well this week - keep up the good work guys!
